In our latest Going Beyond blog post, our series that aims to show what it’s really like to work at Beyond, we spoke to Elise Peterson to learn more about her experience at Beyond.

Elise is our Director of Talent and below, she discusses her journey to Beyond, her experience, and what she loves most about being part of our dynamic company.

How long have you been at Beyond, and what is your role?

I’m the Director of Talent and have been at Beyond for 5 years. I am responsible for the overall development and execution of our global recruiting strategy, internal talent strategy, compensation strategy, and employment brand strategy.

What brought you to Beyond?

Before Beyond, I had been recruiting for 5 years, first at a family services non-profit and then at an HR tech start-up (where I fell in love with the fast-paced nature of working in tech!) Over those years, I found that not only did I enjoy recruiting, but I also loved coaching and mentoring other recruiters. The opportunity to help build out the recruiting function at Beyond came at the perfect time in my career! I was excited to manage a global team, lead high-growth hiring initiatives, and I was impressed by the product and the industry. And the people I met throughout my interview process? Icing on the cake! Joining Beyond was an absolute no-brainer!

What does great talent look like at Beyond, and how has your sense of that evolved since you joined?

Good talent meets the standard job requirements, but GREAT talent has strong alignment with our core values and thrives in our fast-paced, data-driven, feedback-oriented environment. That has always been true for Beyond, but over time, as we’ve scaled from an early-stage start-up to a growth-stage company, our commitment to staying curious and hiring individuals with a high-level of curiosity has been an added evaluation point. 

What's one thing candidates are often surprised to learn about Beyond during the hiring process?

How globally diverse we really are and that we stay connected! Beyond has employees across 16 countries, but we’re still one team. Whether it’s through our global All-Hands meeting, annual hackathons, shared projects, or company-sponsored virtual events and initiatives, we have the opportunity to interact with everyone, regardless of location. 

What advice would you give to someone who's considering applying to Beyond?

Be proactive! A post-application follow-up, a thank-you note after interviews, coming to every interview well researched and with thoughtful questions - all of this goes a long way in helping a candidate stand out. 

How do you approach building diverse, global teams while still maintaining a strong shared culture?

For us, these two things aren't a tradeoff; they're deeply connected! We have team members across the globe and from various cultures, and that's a reflection of how we think about talent: great people are everywhere. So when hiring, we keep our interview processes grounded and driven by our values that include knowing diversity is a strategic advantage. Bringing different perspectives, backgrounds, and cultures is exactly what fuels curiosity, innovation and better decision-making. What keeps us unified, isn't a shared office or time zone, it's our shared values. When everyone is committed to our values, culture becomes portable. It shows up in how we communicate, how we make decisions, and how we treat each other every day. 

What are you most excited about for the future?

Knowing we will continue to be successful on all fronts excites me most: our Beyonders continuing to develop their careers, the impact we’ll have on our customers and the industry, and the innovation of our product. Not to mention, the ways AI will continue to unlock new capabilities for our product, create efficiencies for our Beyonders, and drive real results for our customers. We’ve built something really special here, and I’m excited to continue to be a part of it!

What is your favorite part about working at Beyond?

Simply put, my favorite part is the people I get to work with every day. More specifically, I love the trust we have in one another. Working here requires comfort with autonomy, ambiguity, a level of risk-taking, and building the plane while flying it. That’s challenging, but knowing you are surrounded by people who will have your back through it all makes working at Beyond fun and highly rewarding!
