Starting as an analyst on the Revenue Management team in 2019, Ryan Saylor has seen the company grow tremendously, from employee headcount to partners gained to product features released. As he grew into his current role as Head of Partnerships for Beyond, he also became an expert in the vacation rental industry, known for speaking at national conferences and directly helping vacation rental managers grow their businesses.
In our latest Going Beyond blog post, our series that aims to show what it’s really like to work at Beyond, we spoke to Ryan and learned more about his experience growing his career at Beyond.
How did you get started at Beyond? What is your role?
I first joined Beyond as an analyst on the revenue management team where I helped launch new markets, monitored the pricing algorithm, and worked directly with property managers using Beyond’s dynamic pricing software. I previously worked in hotel revenue management and was able to see a lot of the similarities and differences between both industries firsthand. In my revenue management role, I also spent time attending industry conferences and meeting with a lot of our partners.
At the end of 2021, I transitioned into a new role as Head of Partnerships at Beyond where I am now responsible for working with all of our wonderful partners.
How has Beyond changed since you joined until now?
Over the past few years, I have definitely seen a lot of growth at Beyond which has been really exciting. When I first started in our San Francisco office, we had a few team members in Lisbon and others based remotely around the US. The team continued to grow over the years, even through 2020 when the company went 100% remote. I think we were about 50 people when I first started, so it’s great to see the team grow to almost 200 employees worldwide. Seeing our European team grow significantly has been inspiring and I thankfully had the opportunity to visit our newly-opened office in the heart of Barcelona.
From a product standpoint, I first joined the company when we were still mainly focused on our dynamic pricing software. Over time, we’ve launched new products like Insights to help users visualize their data and Signal to help drive more direct bookings for property managers and hosts. Coming from the hotel industry, it has been exciting for me to see revenue management evolve in the vacation rental industry over the years alongside our new product offerings.
How has your role at Beyond changed?
As I moved from the product team over to the go-to-market side of our business, my role responsibilities shifted quite a bit. It was great to have a really thorough understanding of our products and to have the experience of actually working with property managers all around the world. In my role on the Partnerships team, I am able to use a lot of this context to help solve problems for our users with new integrations and partnerships within the vacation rental industry.
What is one thing that you’ve learned about the vacation rental industry?
Throughout my time in the vacation rental industry, I have been pleasantly surprised to see just how entrepreneurial and driven everyone in this industry is. I’ve met so many people who have started their successful businesses from the ground up and weathered numerous storms over the years. The resiliency and hunger for growth is very inspiring in this industry and that energy is why the vacation rental industry is able to pivot and adapt to changes so well compared to other hospitality businesses.
What is one thing you think people don’t know about the vacation rental industry?
There is so much more to the vacation rental industry than just Airbnb. The rise of Airbnb and other online travel agencies has certainly helped put vacation rentals into a spotlight, but the industry existed long before the internet. I know a lot of people within the vacation rental industry know this, but it’s important to educate people outside of the industry on this point. Vacation rental businesses have thrived around the world for years and there are so many amazing people behind some of the best hospitality experiences. The people in this industry are truly what make it stand out in the broader travel space.
