In our latest Going Beyond blog post, our series that aims to show what it’s really like to work at Beyond, we spoke to Matt Meyers to learn more about his experience on the Beyond team and how he is growing the sales team.
Matt is a Senior Sales Manager and discusses his journey to Beyond, experience, and what he loves most about being part of our dynamic company.
What is your role at Beyond?
I’m the Senior Sales Manager and I manage our Business Development team and Account Executives across North America.
How is working at Beyond different from previous companies?
Beyond moves very quickly and has an electric energy that spans across the world. I still haven’t encountered anyone who isn’t willing to drop what they are doing and jump on a call with a client or a Zoom with a team member to help them when needed. Everyone is surprisingly humble and no job is too big or small, no matter your role or title.
A lot of companies talk about their core values and have posters on the wall, but you can see that Beyond takes them very seriously and makes sure everyone lives those values. They are talked about every week and we spotlight examples of how they are happening in the work that is being done.
You’re working on creating the culture for our North American Sales Team, what does that mean to you? What is the culture you have built so far?
Culture to me is the character and guiding light of our group. When I look at the culture of a team that is something that can’t come from the top down only. It has to come from all of the individuals that are working in that group. My goal is to help us as a team realize what our vision is, define how we are accountable to that, and continue to foster the team to embrace and continuously enhance it. When we have buy-in from the individuals and a clear path on achieving our vision, we can progress forward at a greater rate than if we all are trying to progress as individuals.
Culture isn’t created overnight. We have a lot of very strong contributors on the team and they have taken ownership of the growth we’re seeing. When you come into a company that has a strong foundation with their core values we tend to attract individuals that are aligned with those. All that I am trying to do is help the team to define what they think success looks like and execute against those ideals.
What do you look for when building your team?
I think team dynamics are crucial when you are looking at building a team that can function as a unit instead of individuals. We are always looking for individuals who are great collaborators and can communicate effectively. Since this is a sales team, I also love to have team members who are driven by competition and always want to be #1 or set new records.
It’s important to balance those two components and make sure the structure of the team doesn’t create a cutthroat environment, but one where we want to help each other achieve and then set a new target to beat ourselves.
We are always looking for ways to diversify our team as well and make sure we are bringing in people with different backgrounds, ideas, approaches, etc. We need to be able to challenge ourselves and try new ideas if we are to have sustained success.
What are you most excited for about Beyond’s future?
What I’m most excited about with Beyond is that I think there is a ton of untapped opportunity ahead. While Beyond has been around for over 10 years and has made a name for itself as the leader in Dynamic Pricing, we are not resting on our laurels. Even though our revenue management system is already the best in the market, we are constantly working to enhance the features and algorithm to be even more intuitive and provide more value to our customers.
The industry landscape is changing rapidly, and taking millions of data points daily and making them actionable will only bring more value along the way. Plus, the fact that we continue to innovate and are creating a whole revenue management suite only enhances our capabilities to meet our customers in the areas they need the most help.
What is your favorite part about working at Beyond?
I’ve really enjoyed working with so many dedicated and smart individuals. The culture is very inclusive and welcoming, and that makes you want to make sure you are accountable to everyone. I have loved working with my team and seeing their growth and excitement about what Beyond can do is infectious. You can feel the energy of the potential that is in front of us and everyone is trying to get there as fast as possible.
