In our latest Going Beyond blog post, our series that aims to show what it’s really like to work at Beyond, we spoke to Drew Barlow to learn more about his experience at Beyond.
Drew is our Manager of Global Business Development and recently celebrated his one year anniversary! Below he discusses his journey to Beyond, his experience, and what he loves most about being part of our dynamic company.
What brought you to Beyond?
Back in 2018, I had the privilege of working with Julie Brinkman as a BDR. After that role, I spent some time at a few larger public companies building out & managing BDR teams, but I found myself wanting to return to a smaller, private team with a strong offering.
Lo and behold, Beyond was hiring—and the timing couldn’t have been better! I’m especially grateful to Maria Flores Portillo, our CRO, and the team for taking a chance on me as I came aboard with virtually no formal STR experience.
How long have you been at Beyond, and what is your role?
I just passed the one year mark on September 3rd (time flies when having fun!) & I manage our Global BDR team.
What is it like to lead a team in the US and a team in Europe?
It’s my favorite thing about this role - every BDR on staff brings something unique to the table & I love seeing our team collaborate & support each other, even from across the globe.
You are based in Chicago - tell us about the office! What is it like?
I joke that it’s the trendiest office I’ve ever worked in - a big loft with exposed beams and brick. How could you beat that? But the heartbeat of the office is Shann Mewhirter, our Office Manager, she makes sure every season and holiday is celebrated. I’m so thankful to have such a fun, comfortable space to do great work (with Khruangbin radio on the Sonos, of course)!
Why do you think a hybrid work model is the best fit for you?
Hybrid is great for a handful of reasons, but two stand out:
- It’s a must-have for onboarding and training—new hires get a much stronger start in person.
- Team culture develops faster and more naturally IRL.
Beyond does an incredible job supporting our remote-first teammates, and I’m proud of the culture we’ve built across the board. That said, I’m especially grateful for the environment we’ve created here in Chicago.
What is your favorite part about working at Beyond?
It might sound cliché, but who cares because it’s the truth - it’s the people. GTM success takes coordination across so many departments, and our team makes the complex feel simple—and the extremely difficult, not so difficult. It’s a lot easier to delegate (& sleep at night) knowing that whoever you’re handing off to is world class.
What are you most excited about for the future of Beyond?
I’m definitely excited about our product roadmap, but more broadly, I’m confident we’re well-positioned to support PMs looking to outperform the market in 2026. We’ve already learned a lot in 2025 (shorter booking lead times, occupancy ebbs & flows, etc.) and we’re ready to put those insights into action.
